I have to urgently. We all know this feeling and what we would not give at this moment for the opportunity to go to a toilet. If this is not possible, thanks to our physical conditions, we are usually able to suppress the reflex of “urinating” until we can go to a toilet.

However, not everyone can do that. Incontinence can be an uncomfortable problem that both women and men suffer from. Here you can find out what causes this can have, what it actually means in everyday life and with which aids you can go about your everyday life without problems despite an uncontrollable urge to urinate.

What actually is incontinence?

Incontinence is the technical term for the uncontrolled and sudden leakage of urine. The person concerned is not able to control the urine output, which is why there is often no opportunity to go to a toilet before urination occurs.

About 7 million women and men are affected in Germany alone. There are many reasons for this, but with a little help and the right exercises, they can be made more or less controllable.

What are the causes of incontinence?

Not all incontinence is created equal. There are many different forms of uncontrollable urination, which we will briefly explain below with the most concise causes.

Urge incontinence

With this shape, the bladder is signaled that it is full. This then leads to overactivity, which triggers the uncontrolled urge to urinate. This form of incontinence is often found in the elderly. This is often caused by neurological diseases or side effects of drugs.

Stress incontinence

Stress incontinence affects women much more frequently than men. The reason for this is that this form of incontinence affects the pelvic floor muscles, which are usually weaker in women than in men. Stress incontinence often occurs after injuries to the pelvic floor muscles such as the birth of a child.

Mixed incontinence

This is a combination of the above-mentioned incontinence, in which one of the two forms usually dominates.

Drip incontinence

We speak of this when urine drops continue to leak after using the toilet because the bladder has not been completely emptied. In women, a weak pelvic floor musculature is responsible for this, whereas in men, an enlarged prostate is responsible.

Reflex incontinence

This form often occurs in the case of nerve or spinal cord damage which means that the bladder muscles and the sphincter can no longer be properly controlled.

Overflow incontinence

A narrowing of the urethra prevents the urine from draining properly, which leads to excessive bladder pressure, which triggers incontinence. This is often due to age-related problems such as an enlarged prostate or stones.

Nocturia

This term refers to the nocturnal urge to urinate in adults, which often forces those affected to get up several times during the night to go to the toilet.

Giggle incontinence

This form of incontinence can affect anyone at any time. As the name suggests, it is caused by sudden laughter, which can lead to uncontrolled leakage of urine.

What can I do about incontinence?

Basically, a diagnosis must be made before any treatment. The first thing to do is to find out what type of incontinence it is. A doctor should always be consulted about this.

Once a diagnosis has been made, a further decision must be made. In the treatment of incontinence, a distinction is made between conservative forms of therapy and surgical measures.

Surgical measures against incontinence

Before considering an operative measure against incontinence, conservative forms of therapy should always be tried out first. However, if you decide to have an operation, extensive and varied advice from your doctor is necessary.

Conservative forms of therapy

  • Change in lifestyle habits: If the incontinence arose as a result of a certain lifestyle, it can help to throw some counterproductive habits overboard.
  • Urotherapy: With personalized bladder training, continence can be improved or completely restored. With the help of a urination protocol LINK you can precisely analyze and adapt your training.
  • Physiotherapy: With weakened pelvic floor muscles or weak sphincters, specific exercises can help. Your physiotherapist can help you find the right exercises.

These tools can help you with the treatment
